Emotion of Early Childhood

Emotion development in early childhood is divided into 2 classification, primer emotion and self-conscious emotions. Primer emotions consist of surprise, interest, joy, anger, sadness, fear, disgust. All of them appear in early 6 months. Self-conscious emotions consist of empathy, jealousy, embracement, pride, shame, guilt that appear while their cognition develops. Their understanding about the rules will develop as well as the development of emotion.

Self-conscious emotions need children’s reflective that they are different from adult. There are emotions that can be evaluated their life, such as pride, shame, guilt. These emotion appear when the children in 2 years old. These emotion shows that children respond the norm in their surroundings. Pride will appear when they fell great after doing something, it is related with achievement. Shame appears while the children think that they can’t fulfill the expectation. In this case, they usually try to hide from the situation that they are not comfortable with. The children feel guilty when they evaluate their behavior are failed. The developments of self-conscious emotions depend on respond of the parents to the children behavior.

The important thing of emotion development is how the children express their emotion in the right way. In 2-4 years old, the development of vocabulary are growing fast so it will make the children produce some expresses about their emotion through words. In these ages, they learn about the cause and the consequences of the feeling that they feel. Then while they are 4 -5 years old, they start to reflect their emotion; they realize that the same activity can produce different emotion in different people. They realize that they have to control their emotion.

The parents and teachers can help the children to realize, expresses, and controlling their emotions. They can talk to children to release children bad feeling. They also can introduce empathy to children while guided them to express their feelings.
Emotion has important part of the relationship with peers. Moody child has negative relationship to peer; he will be rejected by his peers. And the child who has positive emotion will be popular.
Example: Aliya is always cranky anytime; she likes to disturb her friends while playing and likes to crying when she doesn’t get what she wants. Those things make her friends don’t want to get along with her. Her friends try not to play with her. Rieno likes to play with many friends and he try to communicate what he wants to others so his friends know what he want and he try to respect others by listening to their friends. His friends like to play with him in every situation.
